Could you have a Septic Problem?
If you have any of the following symptoms, it could point to
a problem with your septic system:
- Backed up plumbing - toilet, sink, shower, etc.
- Soggy lawn (at drainfield location)
- Sewer smell in the yard
There are multiple reasons that a septic system could be causing these symptoms. Here are a few of the typical problems:
- Too many people using the system. Septic systems are installed using standards based on number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, and square footage of the home. If the system is older, the standards used when it was installed may not be good enough for the actual usage. If you have a large family, many roommates or visitors, the system could get overloaded.
- Using too much water. If you're using your washer or dishwasher more often than normal, that could cause issues. For older systems, just using the washer and dishwasher at the same time could cause temporary problems with backing up. A leaky faucet or toilet can put too much water into the septic tank, filling it up - as well as disrupting the bacteria proportion in the tank.
- Too much grease. DON'T POUR GREASE DOWN THE DRAIN! Grease floats to the top of the septic tank. The design of the tank helps prevent grease from travelling to the drainfield. However, if too much grease gets into the system, something will get clogged. Ultimately, this can cause the drainfield to fail and need complete replacement.
- Roots in the drainfield. A stray tree root will destroy a drainfield. Do not plant anything on or near your drainfield. Even a small tree or plant could have long roots that could permiate the drainfield. Driving vehicles over or putting heavy objects (like a shed) on a drainfield could crush the chambers.
- Flushing inappropriate items down the drain. Do not let the following objects get into your plumbing system: paper towels, newspapers, paper, rags, cat litter, disposable diapers, sanitary napkins, tampons, facial tissues, coffee grounds, cigarette butts and filters. Also, beware of chemicals. When using cleaning supplies, even laundry detergent, too much can affect the bacteria level in the tank. The bacteria is necessary for breaking down solids, keeping the system healthy. Although some cleaning chemicals are necessary for household cleaning, avoid pouring bleach or harsh chemicals down the drain. Don't use too much detergent. Even drain cleaner can be dangerous to the septic tank. Also, beware of the garbage disposal. Although convenient, too much food matter entering the system is not healthy to the bacteria.
